GAGE PARK

Gage Park is the Oldest Municipal Park in Brampton, Ontario. Although there are several parks now operating in the city, you’d be surprised to know that Brampton didn’t have any public park for years. At that time, the Athletic Grounds and Fair Grounds were used for large gatherings and public celebrations.

Sir William J.Gage purchased a 3.25 acres part of gardens and lawns on Main Street in 1902. He then donated almost half of this land to the town so that the authorities may convert it to a park. The authorities collected more donations from the citizens to buy extra land for building a larger park.

It took almost a year to prepare the park for locals. And finally, the park was opened in 1903 on Dominion Day. This park offers a fountain, large trees, a gazebo, floral gardens, a wading pool, and trails for jogging and rollerblading.

THE FOUR CORNERS

The Four Corners at Main and Queen were initially known as the “Buffy’s Corners” because they were started as a crossroads hamlet. The civic buildings and homes in this area were built after 1867 while the Grand Trunk Railway, the Dale Estate Nurseries, and Haggert Foundry were introduced in the mid-1800s.

Heggie Block

Heggie Block is distinguished by its arched windows and Mansard roof. Doctor David Heggie was the owner of this building who stayed here while working as a physician for the County Jail. The rumours say that the administration built a cell with iron bars in this home’s basement. It’s said that the cell was used for keeping the prisoners awaiting treatment.

PAMA

The Wright Castle

The Wright Castle showcases the High Gothic Revival architecture. This castle is located between Market Street and the Church Street West. This castle was built for George Wright, a politician and businessman of Brampton. Although the castle is now covered by siding, it originally had a brick facade.

Some other elements were also removed over time, such a belvedere, a side tower, and a rear wing. William Grenville Davis, J.W. Hewetson, George Williams, and John A. Thistle lived in this castle at various points in time.

The Boyle House

As the name suggests, this house belongs to one of the oldest families of Brampton known as “The Boyles.” This family was quite prominent in the commerce scene in Brampton because they operated Boyle’s Book Store on Main Street South and the Boyle’s Drug Store on Main Street North.

Another reason why it’s ranked as a historical site is that it showcases the architectural style of the Second Empire. Moreover, the house is located between two landmark churches, the First Baptist and St. Paul’s United. Robert Boyle, a famous member of the family, was the minister at St. Paul’s United in the late 1800s.
